Stag magazine had existed for years, decades in fact, by the time Richard Milner became its managing editor in the late 1970s.
It was first published by Official Com. Inc. and edited by Noah Sarlat, and debuted in 1951 as a 25-cent, 82-page, standard-sized men’s adventure magazine. Its staple was ‘true-life’ fiction of men in wartime or in rugged adventure mode.
In 1953, its publisher threatened a fledgling magazine founder called Hugh Hefner with a trademark infringement lawsuit unless he changed the name of his planned men’s magazine, Stag Party; Hefner re-dubbed the magazine Playboy.
In 1958, Martin Goodman took over the magazine, using first his Atlas Magazines imprint, and then switching to his Magazine Management company. Stag became part of a stable of monthly publications which included ‘For Men Only’ and ‘Male’, and employed talented young writers including Mario Puzo, Bruce Jay Friedman, David Markson, Mickey Spillane and Martin Cruz Smith wrote, until they became too exalted and rich to write for them anymore.
In the 1970s, Stag transitioned to become a men’s pornographic magazine, published by Goodman’s son Charles ‘Chip’ Goodman at Magazine Management’s successor company, Swank Publications.
When Richard Milner was hired in the late 1970s, he brought a new area of focus to the storied magazine: he aligned it closely to the burgeoning adult film industry in New York, including interviews, picture spreads, and gossipy articles about the XXX scene. The change in direction worked: circulation increased dramatically and Richard started new titles, including Porn Stars, to capitalize on the new interest. Stag magazine, which now hired many adult industry stalwarts, became a journal of sorts for the sex film business.
We look back at the issues published in 1980, which include articles and photo spreads with Lisa de Leeuw, Desiree Cousteau and Seka, and features on film such as Ecstasy Girls and Dracula Exotica, and much more.

Kandi Barbour. Sometime around 1980 I saw her in person at a theater on 15th st. in Washington DC. After buying a ticket to the movie, I walked into the theater lobby and was shocked to see that they had set up a sort of booth with Kandi inside, I think sitting on a stool. Professional lighting on her face, and she was heavily made up. Absolutely stunningly gorgeous, I mean really. I remember thinking she was even more beautiful in person than on film, and one of the most beautiful women I’d ever seen. I didn’t speak to hear as it was kind of a strange deal with her handlers where the patrons were expected to just quickly look at her and keep moving.
