Candy Samples was one of the true larger than life figures that lit up the early adult industry.

Whether is it was in black and white cheesecake photo sets from the late 1960s, thousands of magazine appearances, and scores of films – from softcore to hardcore, from loops to catfight wrestling shorts.

She had a mischievous, friendly look that stood out from all the other models. She often played the roles of older women that somehow looked like your mother’s naughty friend, exuding a mysterious sex appeal.

And then there were her breasts. With her formidable physique, she looked like an Amazonian queen; fit, tanned and physically invincible. No wonder she was cast as Chief Nellie in the 1974 science fiction spoof Flesh Gordon, or in the 1979 Russ Meyer film Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens.

Her staggering physique made her an instant favorite, and for many years she toured as an exotic dancer. Somehow she just seemed to get better with age. She developed a huge following that endured right through to her retirement in the late 1980s – and continues today.

After she retired, she remained active – writing columns in the 1990s for magazines like Juggs. And she had an online fan club where she would have chat sessions with fans.

About ten years ago she disappeared from public view just as we were getting curious to learn more about her life. What was it like being one of the people who was there at the birth of the adult industry? And how difficult had been to stay there for so long?

The Rialto Report figured that as she’d been active in the industry for almost 40 years it wouldn’t be difficult to find her. We figured wrong.

We looked for the legendary star and made some surprising discoveries.

This episode’s running time is 45 minutes.

    Dear Candy,

Thank you for everything that you have done in your life. You have brought much happiness to so many people. I hope you are happy – and you sound happy – in your retirement.

You will always be my favorite model from the vintage years.

    Bless you.

I cannot express my appreciation for the class and style that this interview was done in. Obviously, Candy was having a few memory issues and the questions were either rephrased or just dropped. I wasn’t even thinking this was an interview with a former porn star, but a nice elderly lady reflecting on her younger days. Again, a professional interview — top notch. I’m very proud of the way this was conducted.

I echo Pat’s eloquent comments above. Well said!

This interview could have been a disaster in lesser hands, but Candy’s warmth shone through and this wasn’t so much an interview with an adult film model/actress but a meditation on growing older and dealing with one’s past. I just thank TRR for having interviewed Candy in such a touching way.

And as for “Lulu” herself, you are loved and appreciated forever. As you mentioned, you live in the future!

I listen to your moments with Candy Samples over and over. It is so wonderful that someone captured her life in her own voice. You are to be commended for your work in finding her and meeting her. I wish I had been able to meet her back in the day, maybe a lunch, enjoy her smile, have fun, and to have seen her perform would have been so memorable. Amazing life, astounding body. Thank you.

Candy was one of the all time greats. I still have many of her magazines from the 70s with Uschi and some with John Holmes. Classy lady most certainly

      Hi April,
Many thanks for this honest and touching interview, what a wonderful lady, she was, away from the adult movies. I’m sad to have just heard of her passing. Did you by any chance manage to get a photo of Candy during this time?

      • Ashley West · June 7, 2020 Reply

If you use the search box on the home page of our website – you’ll find other features we’ve done on Candy Samples, which include pictures of her prior to her passing.

        Thanks.

Candy was absolutely delightful when we did an episode on her for Midnight Blue and High Times, around 1982. She greeted us from a bubble bath in her suite at the Plaza Hotel. She allowed everyone to examine her boobs, with a great sense of humor. More like a scientific experience than a sexual one. A sweet, marvelous lady.

‘…ol’ trees just get stronger…’ In 1979 I went to work for Gourmet Video Collection both as a producer/director and salesman. One of the best selling videos GVC sold, by far, was the one that starred Candy Samples. We kept it in stock and sold counteless numbers either vhs OR beta; i still have my copy.. Candy is a living legend! the Ultimate pin up girl. Like Vanessa Del Rio, Lee Carrol and Serena, Candy did not discriminate. She did a magazine layout with midget porn star Louis Short Stud where they were in a shower together, and Candy had a big smile on her face, great lady.

RR does it again in spades, with one exception:

‘After she retired, she remained active – writing columns in the 1990s for magazines like Juggs. ‘

Surely you must know most actresses had nothing to do with those features under their names.

Can someone pass on to her that she has residuals from SAG outstanding under the name “Mary Gavin”. It may not be much money but it does belong to her.

Exceptional. A Rialto interview with Candy ten years ago would’ve been more detail-oriented but this… well, this transcends the porn star interview genre.

Hearing Candy’s reaction to seeing her old pictures was a special moment in podcasting.

This is priceless, and Candy is utterly charming. I’ve been a fan of hers since the mid-70s and am delighted to get to hear this and find that she is happy and well. The interview itself is very well conducted. I was interested to find that, as I suspected, Candy was indeed always older than was widely stated when she was modeling. She was always the epitome of the sexy older woman to me.

    • Good ole days · October 19, 2015 Reply

There were several other fans that suspected she was born several years earlier than the widely given birth year of 1940. She certainly had “mature” looking face. But the fact the she was born in 1928 and started her career at age 40 and then went on to have a very successful nude modeling and stripping career for 20 years makes it all the more impressive.

I hope Candy’s remaining years are very happy ones.

    Wow!

    Amazing!

    More than amazing!

You did a fabulous job, April! I loved the whole introduction. It was very informative. Candy laughs a lot!
You know, there was even a couple of times when I wasn’t even sure who was talking! In parts of the interview, Candy sounded more in the zone, more aware in her memory of what she was talking about that I even mistook her for April.

I’m sad to hear about her son and angered and shocked at what those husbands and that exploiter did to her.

It’s interesting that she’s with a fan now. Her story has a similarity to Helga Sven’s. You almost never hear about stars getting into relationships with a fan. Even more so from a porn star and an elderly porn star. It’s sweet and touching. I wonder who the fan is. How old is he? Is he straight?

Heartbreakingly beautiful. It was so good to hear April’s sexy/smoky voice again. Her kindness and genuine concern for Candy shone through. How wonderful that you were able to capture Candy’s memories, though fleeting they were, and bring her joy. Her candid, childlike comment to April, “I like you, you’re nice” moved me almost to tears. Thank you for documenting erotic gods and goddesses like Candy before they’re gone. As usual, your choice of music is impeccable. Ending with John Prine’s “Hello In There” was pure genius.

You’ve done a masterful job of tracking down and interviewing Candy. She’s always been one of my favorite adult performers.

While I am sad to hear she’s suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, I am glad to hear she feels she’s led a wonderful life.

I was simply gob-smacked to learn she was born in 1928! I actually learned this from her Wikipedia article – which I’ve been checking every so often to see if there was any new info about what she’s been up to since retiring from the industry. While there was no new info, the new birth date made me do a Google search to see if I could find out where the new date came from, which led me here.

    Thanks again!

This was a really poignant and compelling podcast with Candy. Thanks for handling it so well.

Here is more on Candy’s background and other interesting info she couldn’t recall from the great Taschen book “The Big Book of Boobs” which contains and informative interview with her:

-Her biological father died after getting in poison ivy while under his car working on it. This was before her mother knew she was pregnant with Candy. Candy’s mother went to a home for unwed mothers and had a nervous breakdown and Candy was born premature and weighed under 4 lbs.

-Her mother was going to give up for adoption, because it was thought as terrible back then to have a child out of wedlock, but couldn’t after seeing her for the first time.

-Her mother met her stepfather when she was 3 years old.

-Candy met her first husband when she was in her last year of Art School. They soon married and had a son called Rick (probably born in the early 1950s). Her husband died the car accident when her son was 5 years old.

She started dancing in LA at the Century Lounge. She retired from dancing in 1985.

After retiring from her career in adult, she worked as a real estate appraiser and did well with that.

Oh, April, thank you! You were wonderful with Candy, and she deserves nothing less.

I am so happy that Candy remembered our mutual friend, Dick James. I’ll make sure he gets this link. She says, “I was real square”. Always was, still is!. Candy is the straightest, most lady-like person in the history of the adult industry. When you described how Candy sat on the edge of the sofa with her legs tucked, all leggings and sequins, I could see her clear as day. Attentive, always upbeat, always interested in what the other person had to say.

Candy married a couple of fans, men who wanted to be with the Sexy Celebrity Candy Samples, the persona, not the actual person Candy is. No one except Candy ever thought that grease ball Pat Romano was a good idea.

John, whoever you are, thank you for taking care of Candy; she sounds genuinely happy. I’m glad to hear she has a good man in her life.

    • April Hall · December 18, 2015 Reply

Aw thanks so much Sharon! Candy does deserve the best – she’s a truly lovely woman who hasn’t always had the easiest go of it but has somehow managed to keep a positive outlook. We could all learn a thing or two from her.

What a great and classy interview. It’s amazing how in our minds we usually think of women that were in that industry as someone completely different from who they really are. She is just a sweet old lady that if you did not know it would have no idea of her past. And what she did in her eyes was just what she enjoyed and not for any other reason. I thought it was great how she had never really watched her own movies or had those pictures of herself. Which just shows she was the furthest thing from being narcissistic or self centered. Just a sweet lady. So sad to hear of all the bad things thinges that happened to her along the way. But glad she can still laugh like a school girl. God bless her…

I was saddened to hear her saying how she’s been hurt by some men in the past. I can absolutely identify in a sense what she has gone through. It was a treat to learn she is alive and although she is suffering a bit, that she seems happy and without a doubt, has earned her happiness. She is a legend and I’m not sure if she fully understands what she’s left for us. It has been for me, totally appreciated and will never be forgotten. 27 or 87, she still has a place in my heart and like many other men & women we wish her the best in he life. April —- WOW, what a great interview. Sensitive with just the right questions for Candy. Listening to her voice takes me back to a simpler time in America…..Candy’s infectious laugh I still can recall as if it were yesterday. I remember Candy from back in the late 1970s’……first seeing her in magazines and purchasing “loops” of her early work. There was always a special hot, yet sweet down to earth aura about her. Then, it must have been about 1979 I actually saw her in New York City at the ROXY Burlesque house on 44th and Broadway I believe…..I was front row center and told her I wanted to see her backstage after her performance for a chat and some Polaroids….she obliged and I was thrilled to meet her one on one. We chatted, took about five photos, various poses – sitting/standing/laying on a couch etc…..she was as into it and as enthusiastic about the shots as I was!!…I remember one specifically when she told me to stand behind her….then she whispered that I should wrap my arms around her and hold her gorgeous breasts…..Great memories. I had no idea she was in her 80’s…..I always thought she was in her 70s and time to time I would go online inquisitive STILL about this gorgeous icon of that era. Sad to hear that she had a bit of a rough life….I remember seeing that Pat Romano leach with her at a later show in Manhattan……he looked like a bad choice, but we all make them. Her Alzheimers is sad as well, as I am familiar with the disease….my dad had it. She still sounds great and her memory though sketchy still appears sound…..So April, once again thanks for the interview and the update on this fabulous star of my youth.

Wonderful stuff, great interview with an absolute legend, I remember her very well, she stood out in more than one way! She was one in a million. The interview was very well carried out, sensitive April Hall, very good, thank you from the UK!!

I discovered her in my dad’s sock drawer. A magazine that I used to masturbate to as a very young man. Candy Samples was the inspiration for my first climax. I will never forget that and am truly grateful for this insightful interview that makes her a little more real to me, 40 years later. Thank you.

I was a fan of Candy Samples. I have many magazines. I met Candy Samples at the Mitchell Brothers Theatre in San Francisco, California in 1977. She told me her true age and the magazines wanted her younger. I have an autographed photo of myself with Candy Samples. She was a charming lady. Thank you

I’m 39 and have loved to look at Candy since I saw my first juggs magazine at 11 years old. This interview was amazing! She is a real woman. She lived life and had many experiences. She made mistakes as we all have in life and has now come to peace with things she did, good ,bad,or otherwise. It sounds like she did live a good clean life with the exercise and no drugs or smoking. That’s why she looked fantastic at 50 and 60 and even today. I’m from Nebraska and can hear her Midwestern farm accent. What a neat lady! Thank you Rialto report for a classy top notch interview!!

All I can say is “WOW!”

This was such an amazing and touching interview. I happened across your podcast by accident that started with a search Wikipedia search for Flash Gordon which naturally lead to “Flesh Gordon”, which lead to “…whatever happened to Candy Samples?” As I posted on my Facebook page when I linked this podcast that I can only describe her as my generations Betty Paige; if you’re a boy of the seventies/eighties more than likely you knew who she was.

Her life would be perfect for a feature length film.

Thank you for such a remarkable interview. I look forward to following your work, as I just recently stumbled upon your site when I googled Candy Samples. Candy was a true legend…still love those early 70’s loops with John Holmes and Candy ! Guys my vintage ( 59 ) grew up on those great legends of porn.

    Great work April !

I may be a bit of an anomaly here but I am a gay man who has always enjoyed “straight” adult films. I remember back in high school actually having that copy of Erotic X Film Guide with Candy on the cover! I absolutely love listening to your podcasts as I recognize many of the names and find the whole Golden Age fascinating.
April, your interview with Candy was nothing short of brilliant. It made me cry (ha, the sensitive gay man 🙂
as my own mother was born in 1928 and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. I am the only son and have always been very close to my mother. Thankfully, she still remembers me but much has been lost and more is slowly slipping away. Hearing Candy talk about her son was heartbreaking to me. But her overall positive light shined through in this interview. When you asked if it bothers her that she can’t remember some things, I loved her response of “no, because I remember something else.. What a beautiful soul she is!
You did an amazing job of navigating her life in the presence of this horrible disease that robs people of precious memories. Again, brilliant! Thank you so much for this, and all of your work! Much love to you!

Thank you so much James! We’re sorry to hear about your mother but are pleased if Candy’s story provided some solace. As you say she really is a beautiful soul and her light continues to shine through. Thank you so much again for taking the time to comment.
