Candy Samples was one of the true larger than life figures that lit up the early adult industry.
Whether is it was in black and white cheesecake photo sets from the late 1960s, thousands of magazine appearances, and scores of films – from softcore to hardcore, from loops to catfight wrestling shorts.
She had a mischievous, friendly look that stood out from all the other models. She often played the roles of older women that somehow looked like your mother’s naughty friend, exuding a mysterious sex appeal.
And then there were her breasts. With her formidable physique, she looked like an Amazonian queen; fit, tanned and physically invincible. No wonder she was cast as Chief Nellie in the 1974 science fiction spoof Flesh Gordon, or in the 1979 Russ Meyer film Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens.
Her staggering physique made her an instant favorite, and for many years she toured as an exotic dancer. Somehow she just seemed to get better with age. She developed a huge following that endured right through to her retirement in the late 1980s – and continues today.
After she retired, she remained active – writing columns in the 1990s for magazines like Juggs. And she had an online fan club where she would have chat sessions with fans.
About ten years ago she disappeared from public view just as we were getting curious to learn more about her life. What was it like being one of the people who was there at the birth of the adult industry? And how difficult had been to stay there for so long?
The Rialto Report figured that as she’d been active in the industry for almost 40 years it wouldn’t be difficult to find her. We figured wrong.
We looked for the legendary star and made some surprising discoveries.
This episode’s running time is 45 minutes.

I CANNOT WAIT TO LISTEN TO THIS!!!
Thank you almighty Rialto Report. You have made me a happy man.
Candy, you are being hurtled into the future..
Thank you baby!!! .. And thank you April.
I’m listening to this now and am already touched by Candy. This is a poignant, moving tribute.
Dear Candy,
Thank you for everything that you have done in your life. You have brought much happiness to so many people. I hope you are happy – and you sound happy – in your retirement.
You will always be my favorite model from the vintage years.
Bless you.
I cannot express my appreciation for the class and style that this interview was done in. Obviously, Candy was having a few memory issues and the questions were either rephrased or just dropped. I wasn’t even thinking this was an interview with a former porn star, but a nice elderly lady reflecting on her younger days. Again, a professional interview — top notch. I’m very proud of the way this was conducted.
Pat
I echo Pat’s eloquent comments above. Well said!
This interview could have been a disaster in lesser hands, but Candy’s warmth shone through and this wasn’t so much an interview with an adult film model/actress but a meditation on growing older and dealing with one’s past. I just thank TRR for having interviewed Candy in such a touching way.
And as for “Lulu” herself, you are loved and appreciated forever. As you mentioned, you live in the future!
April.
I listen to your moments with Candy Samples over and over. It is so wonderful that someone captured her life in her own voice. You are to be commended for your work in finding her and meeting her. I wish I had been able to meet her back in the day, maybe a lunch, enjoy her smile, have fun, and to have seen her perform would have been so memorable. Amazing life, astounding body. Thank you.
Dennis
Candy was one of the all time greats. I still have many of her magazines from the 70s with Uschi and some with John Holmes. Classy lady most certainly
Hi April,
Many thanks for this honest and touching interview, what a wonderful lady, she was, away from the adult movies. I’m sad to have just heard of her passing. Did you by any chance manage to get a photo of Candy during this time?
If you use the search box on the home page of our website – you’ll find other features we’ve done on Candy Samples, which include pictures of her prior to her passing.
Thanks.
Candy was absolutely delightful when we did an episode on her for Midnight Blue and High Times, around 1982. She greeted us from a bubble bath in her suite at the Plaza Hotel. She allowed everyone to examine her boobs, with a great sense of humor. More like a scientific experience than a sexual one. A sweet, marvelous lady.
Well done to all concerned. This was very moving. Now I’m off to find out why I stifle a tear while listening to a porn podcast.
‘…ol’ trees just get stronger…’ In 1979 I went to work for Gourmet Video Collection both as a producer/director and salesman. One of the best selling videos GVC sold, by far, was the one that starred Candy Samples. We kept it in stock and sold counteless numbers either vhs OR beta; i still have my copy.. Thank you April for one of the best, sweetest, Rialto Reports. Top shelf!
Thank you so much Roy!
That was a great interview whith candy it moved me, but I am happy she still alive, she is my all time favorite star, still to this day I will watch a video or look at internet pictures of her, and smile she was always classy, some people do porn But candy samples did it very classy and very sexy, that broke my heart how all those so call men, stole all of our money, and the lost of her son, thank you for finding her a fan
WOW! If you still have an original copy! THAT is unique.
Candy is a living legend! the Ultimate pin up girl. Like Vanessa Del Rio, Lee Carrol and Serena, Candy did not discriminate. She did a magazine layout with midget porn star Louis Short Stud where they were in a shower together, and Candy had a big smile on her face, great lady.
RR does it again in spades, with one exception:
‘After she retired, she remained active – writing columns in the 1990s for magazines like Juggs. ‘
Surely you must know most actresses had nothing to do with those features under their names.
That’s true Percy but she was compensated for use of her name so we felt it was right to cite it. Thanks for commenting!
Understood, and I meant to add how moving the interview was.
Thank you so much Percy!
Can someone pass on to her that she has residuals from SAG outstanding under the name “Mary Gavin”. It may not be much money but it does belong to her.
Good thought Thomas – we will let Candy and her caretaker know.
Excellent.
@Dizzy: Some of us are still trying to figure this one out. 🙂
This one was a bit of a stretch for me.
Exceptional. A Rialto interview with Candy ten years ago would’ve been more detail-oriented but this… well, this transcends the porn star interview genre.
Hearing Candy’s reaction to seeing her old pictures was a special moment in podcasting.
This is priceless, and Candy is utterly charming. I’ve been a fan of hers since the mid-70s and am delighted to get to hear this and find that she is happy and well. The interview itself is very well conducted. I was interested to find that, as I suspected, Candy was indeed always older than was widely stated when she was modeling. She was always the epitome of the sexy older woman to me.
There were several other fans that suspected she was born several years earlier than the widely given birth year of 1940. She certainly had “mature” looking face. But the fact the she was born in 1928 and started her career at age 40 and then went on to have a very successful nude modeling and stripping career for 20 years makes it all the more impressive.
I hope Candy’s remaining years are very happy ones.
Thank you, this is the podcast I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you again, what a moving interview. It brought tears to my eyes. We love Candy!
Wow! This is just amazing…what incredible research by the RR. Candy Seems like a Wonderful lady.
A fabulous update as always – April Hall is a terrific interviewer and has a lovely voice!
Thank you so much for the kind words Steve!
Thank you so much for your absolutely amazing work with this podcast! I can’t believe you managed to track down and interview both Uschi and now Candy! They both have always been favorites of mine and to listen to them talk about their lives is incredible. Thank you for providing so many informative, well-made, funny and often moving podcasts. You do outstanding and I feel important work and it’s highly appreciated!
Well done April Hall. It was a great listen. Lots of great information and masterfully orchestrated. Wonderful bonus was hearing that Ms. Hall’s chest compares in form to Candy Sample’s prize winning rack. WOW!
Thank you Rod – but believe me, I’m nothing compared to Candy!
Amazing interview!
I love Candy Samples and this is a brilliant tribute to her.
The Rialto Report is essential!
Wow!
Amazing!
More than amazing!
You did a fabulous job, April! I loved the whole introduction. It was very informative. Candy laughs a lot!
You know, there was even a couple of times when I wasn’t even sure who was talking! In parts of the interview, Candy sounded more in the zone, more aware in her memory of what she was talking about that I even mistook her for April.
I’m sad to hear about her son and angered and shocked at what those husbands and that exploiter did to her.
It’s interesting that she’s with a fan now. Her story has a similarity to Helga Sven’s. You almost never hear about stars getting into relationships with a fan. Even more so from a porn star and an elderly porn star. It’s sweet and touching. I wonder who the fan is. How old is he? Is he straight?
Her friend and caretaker has asked to remain behind the scenes so we’re going to respect his privacy – we’ll just reaffirm that Candy is in good hands!
Okay then. Thanks for replying to my inquiry.
Heartbreakingly beautiful. It was so good to hear April’s sexy/smoky voice again. Her kindness and genuine concern for Candy shone through. How wonderful that you were able to capture Candy’s memories, though fleeting they were, and bring her joy. Her candid, childlike comment to April, “I like you, you’re nice” moved me almost to tears. Thank you for documenting erotic gods and goddesses like Candy before they’re gone. As usual, your choice of music is impeccable. Ending with John Prine’s “Hello In There” was pure genius.
Always loved Candy Samples, always will. I always enjoyed her movies, she was classy, sexy, and beautiful, I wish that I could have met her in person just to say “Thanks.”
I wish her peace in her later years.
April,
You did a very sensitive interview wilt Candy under the circumstances. I am glad to hear a caring fan is her keeper and that she has found peace with God. She had a rough life no one deserves.
Keep up the great work, Ms. Hall!!!
?
Thank you so much Wes! And yes it is so great that Candy is now well taken care of.
Hi April…
Great interview…Sad to hear about her Alzheimer’s…One thing I wanted to mention…Candy was not in ” Beneath the valley of the Ultravixens “…The busty blond featured in that movie was Ann Marie playing the radio preacher
Eufaula Roop.
Keep up the good work…and I’m still hoping for a Leslie Bovee’ interview someday.
James
Actually, she is in the film, though very briefly: she’s the woman being serviced by the salesman in the VW (her face isn’t shown).
So she’s not credited or shown…ok then…I guess I can figure out why I missed her…:)
According to IMDB, she’s credited as Mary Gavin… a pseudonym she used on many films and in many magazines.
Rialto knocks it outta the park yet again. Each time I think that you can’t better your last feature you keep getting better! If only the DVD reissuers had your intelligence and sensitivity when it comes to this era…
…you have just made my day!! .. SUPER kudos for finding and talking to the legendary woman who helped me through manhood (smile)… Candy will ALWAYS be my favorite in my heart and I will always love her for it…
THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES
_daboobluva1
…been anticipating this for a while, and it finally happened… came out feeling very moved…. not quite a sad story as it was very enlightening… thank you SO much for finally finding this great elusive icon.. much respect for the Rialto Report…
hi guys….funny, sad and how mike findlay would have loved this! he was a huge fan of those heavenly honeydews!!
April, this was a stunning piece of journalism. Thanks and congratulations to you, Candy, and all involved.
Thank you for taking the time to listen Robert!
Candy is the best. Hope that she’s well taken care of. She’s a classy lady who’s led a very difficult life. Dementia is a soul-stripper that reduces the mind to ashes.
I saw her show @ the Mitchell brothers theater in San Francisco
Around 85….had to Polaroids taken with her holding her breasts she was fun to hang out with…..I think I was there all afternoon…..chance and memory of a life time……thanks “candy” nice interview…..compassionately done by the interviewer
This was the greatest work of journalism ever and it puts the mainstream media to total shame. I love Candy and I am so happy that she is being loved and taken care of.
Thank you so much Ms. Hall for providing a window into the life of Candy Samples. She seems so happy but a little sad, perhaps, as well. Many fans, like me, have wondered about her. There have been so many rumors. Thanks again for an honest picture. Truly an amazing lady. There will never be another like her.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment Dennis! Candy truly is one-of-a-kind and a gentle, loving soul.
My pleasure. She always seemed fragile and vulnerable, but, of course, that was a guess. You have helped to understand her at least a bit. She was obviously a physical wonder. Staggering.
Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this wonderful update on Candy Samples’ life! Another classy and professional episode.
April, I am so envious of you. Keep up the excellent work. Outstanding!
My first exposure to Candy was an unbelievably exceptional March 1979 pictorial in Hustler magazine. Wow!
I am so disgusted with the likes of Mr. Romano. I will always hold a special place in my heart for you Miss Candy.
Thank you so much Dave – I’m really glad you took the time to listen and comment!
Thanks April!
You’ve done a masterful job of tracking down and interviewing Candy. She’s always been one of my favorite adult performers.
While I am sad to hear she’s suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, I am glad to hear she feels she’s led a wonderful life.
I was simply gob-smacked to learn she was born in 1928! I actually learned this from her Wikipedia article – which I’ve been checking every so often to see if there was any new info about what she’s been up to since retiring from the industry. While there was no new info, the new birth date made me do a Google search to see if I could find out where the new date came from, which led me here.
Thanks again!
Thank you so much Barry! We updated Candy’s Wikipedia article after the interview to accurately reflect her birthdate – we’re so glad it lead you to her podcast.
And stay on the look out – we’ll be posting some memories from Candy’s scrapbooks shortly…
This was a really poignant and compelling podcast with Candy. Thanks for handling it so well.
Here is more on Candy’s background and other interesting info she couldn’t recall from the great Taschen book “The Big Book of Boobs” which contains and informative interview with her:
-Her biological father died after getting in poison ivy while under his car working on it. This was before her mother knew she was pregnant with Candy. Candy’s mother went to a home for unwed mothers and had a nervous breakdown and Candy was born premature and weighed under 4 lbs.
-Her mother was going to give up for adoption, because it was thought as terrible back then to have a child out of wedlock, but couldn’t after seeing her for the first time.
-Her mother met her stepfather when she was 3 years old.
-Candy met her first husband when she was in her last year of Art School. They soon married and had a son called Rick (probably born in the early 1950s). Her husband died the car accident when her son was 5 years old.
She started dancing in LA at the Century Lounge. She retired from dancing in 1985.
After retiring from her career in adult, she worked as a real estate appraiser and did well with that.
^ Um, I think you mean The Big Book of Breasts, by Dian Hanson.
Catching up tonight, and oh my. Got to be the first Rialto Report that had me on the verge of tears. As Catherine puts it perfectly in the comment above, heartbreakingly beautiful.
That she is happy and thriving, Alzheimer’s be damned, more than enough to fill me with goodness in the end. Bless John for doing the work of an angel, selflessly.
Bless you too April, for handling this interview so caringly. And I concur with masses…your voice is bangin’.
T.
Oh, April, thank you! You were wonderful with Candy, and she deserves nothing less.
I am so happy that Candy remembered our mutual friend, Dick James. I’ll make sure he gets this link. She says, “I was real square”. Always was, still is!. Candy is the straightest, most lady-like person in the history of the adult industry. When you described how Candy sat on the edge of the sofa with her legs tucked, all leggings and sequins, I could see her clear as day. Attentive, always upbeat, always interested in what the other person had to say.
Candy married a couple of fans, men who wanted to be with the Sexy Celebrity Candy Samples, the persona, not the actual person Candy is. No one except Candy ever thought that grease ball Pat Romano was a good idea.
John, whoever you are, thank you for taking care of Candy; she sounds genuinely happy. I’m glad to hear she has a good man in her life.
Aw thanks so much Sharon! Candy does deserve the best – she’s a truly lovely woman who hasn’t always had the easiest go of it but has somehow managed to keep a positive outlook. We could all learn a thing or two from her.
What a great and classy interview. It’s amazing how in our minds we usually think of women that were in that industry as someone completely different from who they really are. She is just a sweet old lady that if you did not know it would have no idea of her past. And what she did in her eyes was just what she enjoyed and not for any other reason. I thought it was great how she had never really watched her own movies or had those pictures of herself. Which just shows she was the furthest thing from being narcissistic or self centered. Just a sweet lady. So sad to hear of all the bad things thinges that happened to her along the way. But glad she can still laugh like a school girl. God bless her…
April, you did a fantastic job interviewing her. You dealt with her perfectly. She seems like a lovely person who had a couple of bad turns in life. Regardless, she has persevered and has no regrets. This was all very sweet and sad (in some ways) but a great piece of historical importance. Great work!
Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and to comment Keith!
Thank you so much for the kind words Keith!
April, my pleasure, thank you and Ashley for doing all the great work you do, it’s lots of work doing research of this sort (I should know, my wife is a librarian, she started pre-internet era and I used to have her do lots of work for me during the Exploitation Journal years). And let me say it again, you handled Candy perfectly, it’s tough dealing with older folks whose memory is slipping. One has to be gentle, playful and careful when working with them. I give presentations on Cinema, one of the places I present at is an Alzheimer day clinic so I’ve dealt with clients for over 10 years now, that’s why I was particular touched by this… You did a great, great job!
What an amazing interview. You captured the soul of a person in the twilight of her life and shared it with all of us. I loved hearing her true voice and her laughing. I also liked her response to your question of how she wanted to be remembered “As a good person”. Shouldn’t we all aspire to laughing at life and being good? Her mission was accomplished.
I agree David – those are noble aspirations and she really seems to embody them both.
WoW !! I always had a gigantic crush on her as a teenager and adult. Glad she is living well and happy with her life.. She gave so many of us excitement in our own sexual life without even knowing. She without question, is by far THEE brightest biggest star in the industry that was and will ever be.. She was a dream girl everyone dreamed of and pretty much could never forget.. I’m now 54, and would STILL love to meet her.. I hope she lives a long life and stays happy as she seems through this interview.. Thank you so much for letting us listen to her and know that she is still with us… And thank you, you gorgeous women who I’ll never forget from my youth and present..
What a wonderful interview. I feel uplifted today cause I listened to this. Thank you April for sharing this with us fans. I know now that the world she lived in isn’t what we all think it is. I was saddened to hear her saying how she’s been hurt by some men in the past. I can absolutely identify in a sense what she has gone through. It was a treat to learn she is alive and although she is suffering a bit, that she seems happy and without a doubt, has earned her happiness. She is a legend and I’m not sure if she fully understands what she’s left for us. It has been for me, totally appreciated and will never be forgotten. 27 or 87, she still has a place in my heart and like many other men & women we wish her the best in he life. Not sure if she can read or will any of our comments, but Candy ? You made me smile today, and THAT !! Would get you one gigantic hug from any fan of yours for making us smile. God bless and you did a beautiful job April….
What a wonderful comment Matt – we will be sure Candy is made aware of it. We totally agree with you – we don’t think she fully appreciates the value of her legacy. She was and remains a pioneer as well as an incredibly kind and uplifting woman. Thank you so much for listening!
Very nice interview however,
I wish you would have mentioned that at one point ; when she owned a home in Palm Springs her Mother was with her.
There were pictures on the Real Candy Samples Site that prove this.
But again very nice interview of a true
legend and wonderful woman.
Saw her in person at the New Era in Cleveland years ago and even had a picture taken with her (Egads!). She was my all-time favorite porn star and was my ultimate fantasy when I was a teenager. So sorry to hear about her present condition and I wish her peace.
April —- WOW, what a great interview. Sensitive with just the right questions for Candy. Listening to her voice takes me back to a simpler time in America…..Candy’s infectious laugh I still can recall as if it were yesterday. I remember Candy from back in the late 1970s’……first seeing her in magazines and purchasing “loops” of her early work. There was always a special hot, yet sweet down to earth aura about her. Then, it must have been about 1979 I actually saw her in New York City at the ROXY Burlesque house on 44th and Broadway I believe…..I was front row center and told her I wanted to see her backstage after her performance for a chat and some Polaroids….she obliged and I was thrilled to meet her one on one. We chatted, took about five photos, various poses – sitting/standing/laying on a couch etc…..she was as into it and as enthusiastic about the shots as I was!!…I remember one specifically when she told me to stand behind her….then she whispered that I should wrap my arms around her and hold her gorgeous breasts…..Great memories. I had no idea she was in her 80’s…..I always thought she was in her 70s and time to time I would go online inquisitive STILL about this gorgeous icon of that era. Sad to hear that she had a bit of a rough life….I remember seeing that Pat Romano leach with her at a later show in Manhattan……he looked like a bad choice, but we all make them. Her Alzheimers is sad as well, as I am familiar with the disease….my dad had it. She still sounds great and her memory though sketchy still appears sound…..So April, once again thanks for the interview and the update on this fabulous star of my youth.
Thank you for such a thoughtful, sweet response Cody. We’re definitely going to make sure Candy reads your comment – she’ll be tickled!
What a wonderful interview! Candy had curves in places where other women didn’t have places! What a sweet lady, but sad in a way. The years move on so quickly. I wish her good health and happiness!
Thank you Howard – we’ll pass on your message to Candy!
I’m 53 yr.s, I don’t remember exactly how I discovered Candy S. or even exactly when, but it was probably in the very late 70’s, And even as a teen I liked voluptous and a bit mature women,I can say for sure I was blown away by her beauty and sensuality.
Wonderful stuff, great interview with an absolute legend, I remember her very well, she stood out in more than one way! She was one in a million. The interview was very well carried out, sensitive April Hall, very good, thank you from the UK!!
I discovered her in my dad’s sock drawer. A magazine that I used to masturbate to as a very young man. Candy Samples was the inspiration for my first climax. I will never forget that and am truly grateful for this insightful interview that makes her a little more real to me, 40 years later. Thank you.
I was a fan of Candy Samples. I have many magazines. I met Candy Samples at the Mitchell Brothers Theatre in San Francisco, California in 1977. She told me her true age and the magazines wanted her younger. I have an autographed photo of myself with Candy Samples. She was a charming lady. Thank you
I’m 39 and have loved to look at Candy since I saw my first juggs magazine at 11 years old. This interview was amazing! She is a real woman. She lived life and had many experiences. She made mistakes as we all have in life and has now come to peace with things she did, good ,bad,or otherwise. It sounds like she did live a good clean life with the exercise and no drugs or smoking. That’s why she looked fantastic at 50 and 60 and even today. I’m from Nebraska and can hear her Midwestern farm accent. What a neat lady! Thank you Rialto report for a classy top notch interview!!
All I can say is “WOW!”
This was such an amazing and touching interview. I happened across your podcast by accident that started with a search Wikipedia search for Flash Gordon which naturally lead to “Flesh Gordon”, which lead to “…whatever happened to Candy Samples?” As I posted on my Facebook page when I linked this podcast that I can only describe her as my generations Betty Paige; if you’re a boy of the seventies/eighties more than likely you knew who she was.
Her life would be perfect for a feature length film.
Hi does anyone know the estimated value of MAXIMUM publication 4th big printing CANDY SAMPLES First hardcore appearance in years ?
Also how rare is this Maximum all color xxx rated magazine?
April:
Thank you for such a remarkable interview. I look forward to following your work, as I just recently stumbled upon your site when I googled Candy Samples. Candy was a true legend…still love those early 70’s loops with John Holmes and Candy ! Guys my vintage ( 59 ) grew up on those great legends of porn.
Great work April !
Thank you so much John – we’re so grateful that you took the time to listen and enjoyed the interview. We have a bunch more and are always working on new content so please do follow the work.
I may be a bit of an anomaly here but I am a gay man who has always enjoyed “straight” adult films. I remember back in high school actually having that copy of Erotic X Film Guide with Candy on the cover! I absolutely love listening to your podcasts as I recognize many of the names and find the whole Golden Age fascinating.
April, your interview with Candy was nothing short of brilliant. It made me cry (ha, the sensitive gay man 🙂
as my own mother was born in 1928 and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. I am the only son and have always been very close to my mother. Thankfully, she still remembers me but much has been lost and more is slowly slipping away. Hearing Candy talk about her son was heartbreaking to me. But her overall positive light shined through in this interview. When you asked if it bothers her that she can’t remember some things, I loved her response of “no, because I remember something else.. What a beautiful soul she is!
You did an amazing job of navigating her life in the presence of this horrible disease that robs people of precious memories. Again, brilliant! Thank you so much for this, and all of your work! Much love to you!
Thank you so much James! We’re sorry to hear about your mother but are pleased if Candy’s story provided some solace. As you say she really is a beautiful soul and her light continues to shine through. Thank you so much again for taking the time to comment.
i am a oldie but goodie, ran a adult bookstore back in the 70s.the days of change. was all new to me but Candy was a favorite.just learned of her passing.my sympathy to the family and hope all is well. she was a pioneer and a legend. i will always remember her.i am 72,but she was one hot older lady .turned me on many times over . yours truely bob
Awesome interview. Very well done. Have always been a fan of hers as i was born and live in Kansas City. Was great to get some introspect on her life. I can tell she was truly a jewel of a person!
Thank you so much Ronnie!
